When Swimmers Fled Danger, Viral Photo Depicts Lifeguard Running ‘Pedal to the Metal’ In the Direction of the Site.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as inhabitant of Bondi, describes the famous coast as her own backyard. On a recent weekend evening, she, like many neighbors, heard loud noises reverberating through the neighbourhood.

“Everyone did, but I considered it was too light and there was nothing visible,” she explains. She left her home, she saw people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The faces they wore made it clear trouble had occurred.

As she stood on the road, conversing with a pair who had rushed up the hill soaked, she became aware of someone coming up at her rear. This turned out to be a beach patrol officer, dashing towards Bondi unshod from the adjacent Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while carrying a defibrillator.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I spotted this flash of blue,” Ching describes. “He was zooming past. He was the only one moving in the opposite way that the crowd was trying to escape from, and hauling that large equipment and barefoot … He was sprinting towards something that undoubtedly every instinct would tell you to run in the other direction.

“Without a second thought, but just completely full throttle sprinting.”

A Symbol of Bravery In the Wake of Chaos

The photo Ching captured of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as one of many acts of valour in the following of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, another beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to support the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to aid emergency personnel, law enforcement and ambulance crews treating many those hurt.
