Walmart Introduces Purchase Limits on Pokémon TCG Products

As a notable development, Walmart has started enforcing strict limits on how many Pokémon trading card products customers can acquire during a single visit. This new rule was activated starting November 5th, according to a company memo shared with employees.

Addressing Scalper Activity

While not officially confirmed by Walmart, many believe this decision was influenced by a widely shared social media clip that depicted a customer purchasing a massive amount of Pokémon card products at a checkout counter. The store manager featured in the video faced significant criticism for allowing the bulk transaction to proceed.

Rule Specifics and Possible Weaknesses

The updated guideline specifies that shoppers may only buy up to five trading card boxes or packs per store visit. However, the wording has raised questions due to its lack of clarity. What exactly qualifies as a "box" is not defined, and whether someone could buy five high-value Elite Trainer Boxes is uncertain.

Moreover, since the limit is based on individual trips, in theory an eager reseller could make multiple trips—purchasing the maximum each time—to accumulate significant stocks over several hours.

The Reseller Crisis

To most players, this approach might seem excessive, but for scalpers, it's standard practice. Over the past few seasons, speculators have significantly added to frequent stockouts of Pokémon cards, spurred by the TCG's growing fame.

Some resellers seek to sell unopened products at a markup, while others hunt for rare cards that can command extraordinary prices. As an example, the Mega Lucario ex card in recent releases is currently selling at prices exceeding eight hundred dollars in online marketplaces.

Upcoming Releases

This policy change coincides with the imminent release of the Phantasmal Flames set, coming on November 14th. Early listings indicate chase cards like the Charizard mega evolution listed for around fifteen hundred dollars, emphasizing the persistent interest and potential scalper target.

With any luck, Walmart's restrictions will help reduce mass buying and improve availability for genuine collectors and everyday enthusiasts as well.
