Vince Gilligan Discloses He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Will End... For Now.
Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that the Apple TV+ show would become a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he remarks. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
With the first season of the acclaimed series wrapping up—and a second season already in development—Gilligan and his team opened up about the fan response and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.
About the Overwhelming Audience Reaction
It would be easy to get distracted by the constant speculation and online debates surrounding Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that.
“The experience is akin to force fed your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's by design. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Regardless of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by audience chatter.”
“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in.
The Central Mystery: Does Vince Gilligan See the Ending of Pluribus?
Given that the creative staff aren’t being guided by audience theories, can we assume they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… sort of.
“We have some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a good idea for a superior concept. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
On the other hand, if all else fails, Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.
“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Of course, one could always use the iconic TV endings?
“I want Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.
