The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Track
This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure from Critical Role, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching personal histories for characters such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.
Overall, the opening appears amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the song choice.
The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song created by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will love its inclusion.
But for me, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by singer-songwriter the artist, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in that year, and it only got better when cast member the performer added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. This track that excites you before you start an installment of adventurous fun.
The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes for me. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.
Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the series will have a few surprises and differences from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be among these.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of the second series, the actual play are available on the audio platform and the video site.
