Teacher Killed and 25 Female Students Kidnapped in Firefight at School in Nigeria

Armed conflict at school
Schools in northern Nigeria have often been targeted for weapon-wielding factions

Weapon-carrying attackers have taken the life of an instructor and abducted at least 25 students in an raid targeting a girls' secondary school in Nigeria's northwestern region, police reports indicate.

The criminal group breached the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on the start of the week, authorities reported.

The assailants "engaged police personnel on duty in a shootout" before scaling the perimeter fence and abducting the learners from their living quarters, an official report indicated.

One member of staff was fatally shot while defending the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now receiving treatment.

Witnesses reported a sizeable number of assailants, referred to locally as criminal elements, who came shooting randomly to create fear.

Area inhabitants disclosed to media that the attackers afterwards forced a number of girls into adjacent wilderness.

The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "extra specialized police forces, in coordination with armed forces and local protection units" to the area.

A systematic finding and recovery effort is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and suspected escape routes.

In recent years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have become frequent targets for militant organizations, who routinely perform seizures to seek ransom payments or gain negotiating power with authorities.

The assault in Kebbi State highlights the persistent security crisis afflicting the area, leaving families in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they expect and desire their children's secure homecoming.

Protection challenge in the northern regions of Nigeria has worsened considerably in the last several months, with educational institutions bearing the brunt of the unrest.
