Senegal's Emerging Star Lamine Camara: Starting from Dreams to Tournament Favorites.

As I walk into the space, Lamine Camara grabs a football he clings to until after our chat. This serves as a simple symbol for a dream he has never let slip. “I only wanted the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” states the AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His resolve and raw talent won over clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the hardest person to convince was not a club executive or coach, but his own father. “He was against me playing soccer but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.

Overcoming Initial Obstacles

Eventually, on “a special day,” he received his dad's approval to pursue his career in the sport. A further barrier was his small stature, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a contract.

Nevertheless, the famed academy – the institution that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After he earned the best player in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “shocked” to discover he was not tied down. They moved fast. “I was taken directly to the training centre. They didn’t want me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled.

A Landmark Season and Continental Arrival

That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, though tired, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his nation to the title and earning player of the tournament.

A month later, he signed for Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” states the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a choice his family encourage to maintain his concentration.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Distractions are not really a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “humility” and superb playing qualities. He is also a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and accuracy from set pieces are notable assets. Camara confesses a need to temper his aggression, after being shown red early in his tenures at each French club. “It's a trait that is following me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Mentors and Future Ambitions

At Monaco, he cherishes the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” he said.

Right now, attention is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. After defeating England in their own country…,” he says, pointing to a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

Regarding a transfer to the English top flight, he is focused on Monaco for now. “I am very at ease here,” he insists. He is often teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about winning the senior Africa Player of the Year in the future.

“We are the favourites – that's the reality. Having beaten England in their own country… it gives you confidence.”

Moving forward, this talented midfielder combines a modest start, steely determination, and big dreams as he aims to lead Senegal to continental glory and build his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
