Rory McIlroy hails Spoty success with double awards.
Just prior to his name was called, a anxious thought darted through the golfer's mind. He said he was concerned, "Not a racing champion this time."
"This has been a great night for golf," the champion said. "The sport was honored in such a big way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a huge moment for golf, and with any luck we can capitalize on that."
On this occasion, however, there was no late twist. The verdict was clear, allowing a delighted McIlroy to savor a standout evening for both himself and the continental winners, who were honored as the year's best team.
Non-Stop Adventures
But rather than celebrate at the aftershow party, McIlroy was already focusing on his next sporting adventure. Having just played in a tournament in Florida and jetted to the UK, he was returning immediately to the sunshine state.
"It's been a frantic 24 hours," the golfer noted. "I'm looking forward to a little bit of rest over Christmas."
Hunger for More
Nevertheless, McIlroy insisted he has no desire to become complacent, even after achieving the ultimate golfing achievement earlier in the year. "I am confident I've got a several strong seasons in me," he asserted.
"More majors, season-long rankings, international events, that's the target. But provided that you feel like you can keep getting better and have the hunger, that's the most important thing."
Collective Honor
Elsewhere, fellow European Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to receive the team award, also praised golf's remarkable night and his close friend's award.
"Those are the memories that will live with us forever so to get the people's vote for that is really cool," he stated. "Seeing Rory pick that up, I think he has earned it so much."
When reminded that McIlroy was only the third golfer to win the award in its long history, Fleetwood smiled before adding, "Golfers aren't top of the list are we!"
Looking Ahead
His goal is to finally win his first major next year but he recognized McIlroy still craves more success. "Provided that you want to be the greatest possible version of yourself, and you're still motivated, you'll find things to enhance," the 34-year-old said.
United Hopes
Before McIlroy left, an additional topic arose. As a huge Manchester United fan, he has been requested to display his trophies at Old Trafford before. Would he be persuaded to do it again after his recent triumphs?
"Provided that they halt the flow of so many goals on their own pitch," he replied with a grin. "They're getting better. There's a touch of positivity around."
On the back of a 2025 for the ages, it's little surprise that he is looking on the upside.
