Plans for Trump-Putin Talks Postponed Days After Budapest Talks Proposed

There are "no arrangements" for US President Donald Trump to meet Russian President Putin "in the immediate future", a administration representative has declared.

This past week Trump stated he and the Russian president would conduct negotiations in Hungary's capital soon to address the ongoing hostilities.

A planning session between US Secretary of State Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was due to be held recently - but the White House clarified the two had had a "positive" call and that a face-to-face session was no longer "needed".

The White House declined to provide further information on why the talks had been postponed.

Background Context

The US president had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit via telephone with the Russian leader, a day before meeting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the White House.

Various sources claimed his talks with Zelensky had been a "contentious discussion", with insiders indicating the president had urged him to cede large areas of Ukraine's east as part of a deal with Russia.

However, on Monday the American president supported a peace initiative backed by Ukraine and European leaders to freeze the war on the present positions.

"Freeze the lines the way it is," he stated.

Moscow has repeatedly pushed back against halting the existing front lines.

The Russian government was solely focused on "enduring stability", Lavrov said on this week, suggesting that freezing the front line would simply constitute a temporary ceasefire.

Political Perspectives

The "root causes" of the war needed to be addressed, Lavrov stated, using Kremlin shorthand for a set of comprehensive conditions that include the acknowledgment of full Russian sovereignty over the eastern region as well as the demilitarisation of Ukraine – a unacceptable proposition for Ukraine and its Western allies.

Zelensky said conversations concerning the front line were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Russia was "employing all tactics" to avoid diplomacy.

He further commented the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "pay attention" was that of the supply of extended-range arms to Ukraine.

Military Considerations

Putin's unplanned conversation with Trump last Thursday occurred before rumors that the United States was considering delivering long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukrainian forces that could possibly hit deep into Russia.

Zelensky asserted it was the Tomahawks issue that had compelled Moscow to enter into dialogue. The talk about the missiles had emerged as a "strong investment" in diplomacy", he commented.
