Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he is reported as serious yet stable.

“Still unsure,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”

New York police shared security footage earlier this week of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.

The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday in the area between MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was taken to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a child.

“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd did not participate this season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.

He joined the Jets as a free agent in March and was projected as an important component of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
