I thought I edged it - Carey on review reprieve.
Australian gloveman Alex Carey stated he believed he had nicked the ball when he was reprieved on review during day one of the 3rd Ashes Test versus the English.
Having been given a life on 72, Carey crafted a fine 106 to help the home side reach 326-8 at the close in the Adelaide Oval.
The Incident
The home side were 245 for 6 when Carey attempted a cut to seamer Josh Tongue.
The England team lodged a strong appeal, believing they had heard an edge, but on-field official Ahsan Raza gave it not out.
Following skipper Ben Stokes challenged the decision, the footage reviewed by TV umpire Chris Gaffaney displayed a significant spike although this registered prior to the ball had reached the bat.
Gaffaney added he believed there was a space between the bat and the ball.
Consequently, Carey was given not out.
"There was a sound, I thought I'd nicked it," said Carey.
"If I was given out I think I would have reviewed it, probably not confidently. It made a convincing sound near the bat."
Technology Debate
Questions have been raised about 'Snicko'' during the series after a several dubious incidents.
Bowling coach David Saker suggested England may escalate this latest incident to a higher level with match referee Jeff Crowe.
"I don't think we've done anything about it so far but after today, maybe that might go a bit further," Saker said.
"It's been a worry for us all series long. It's disappointing that this is a post-play discussion. That's the situation."
A Special Hundred
The ton was his maiden in Ashes cricket.
It was also an poignant moment for Carey, whose dad passed away in September. His spouse was in tears in the crowd as the batter marked the occasion by looking to the skies.
"To make a hundred here in front of home fans and family was special," said Carey.
"I guess you know as well why I was looking to the heavens. I'm trying not to tear up. It was truly wonderful."
History of Controversy
Carey is not new to Ashes controversy.
He was the wicketkeeper who famously dismissed Jonny Bairstow at Lord's Cricket Ground in the 2023 series, leading to a heated final day.
Speaking about his survival he added: "The sound wave didn't match up. That's how the game works; fortune plays a part."
"Perhaps luck was on my side."
