"Do you know when you'll be chatting with the band?" a text pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

There is only one problem: I also wants to be Haim's newest recruit. And we're far from alone. A host of high-profile fans have openly coveted the role.

One thing is obvious something is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their career playing gigs at small eateries with their family. Now they're multi-time Grammy hopefuls.

In the tradition of the greatest ensembles, they're a close trio. Their videos repeatedly show them striding in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such boundless exuberance you inevitably think, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a bass'," says Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "It is the greatest compliment. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire people to make music."

"Therefore everyone is invited to be the fourth member of Haim."

Historic Nod

The band are speaking from their homes, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is called," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the nomination isn't lost on the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge step," adds Alana. "However we're just thankful for the female artists that paved the way."

Personal Turmoil and Candor

The album came out of a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that odd in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The themes track breakups and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them determining in real time who they are becoming.

"I love summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to consciously practice ignoring the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Sound

That newfound resilience called for a fresh approach – more unpolished and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Laughter

The band's honesty inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their dating tales.

One man left Este over a medical consideration. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Path

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their standing in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with chart-topping albums and an global following.

But Haim will forever be their number one focus.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was four," says Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still making music."
